Buffalo Man Pleads Guilty to ID Sales
BUFFALO, N.Y.– Jorge Garcia, 37, of Buffalo, N.Y., has been brought to justice after pleading guilty to possession with intent to use or transfer unlawfully five or more identification documents. This heinous crime carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., Garcia sold nine sets of identification documents in exchange for $6,300 in cash. These documents consisted of Puerto Rican birth certificates, New York state birth certificates, Michigan state birth certificates, and U.S. Social Security Cards. Garcia was led to believe that these nine sets of authentic identification documents would be used to allow illegal immigrants to remain and work in the United States unlawfully.
The plea is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-In-Charge James C. Spero. This case highlights the importance of cracking down on individuals who seek to exploit the system and profit from the desperation of others.
The defendant’s actions have serious consequences not only for the individuals who purchased the fake IDs but also for the entire community. By selling these identification documents, Garcia put the lives of innocent people at risk and undermined the trust in our institutions.
