A Guatemalan national, Lucas Tinoco-Tieres, 42, was caught reentering the US in St. Tammany Parish on February 18, 2025. He’d previously been deported to Guatemala on February 23, 2007. Why did he come back? Sources close to the case say he was trying to escape violence and poverty.
But Tinoco-Tieres’ return didn’t go unnoticed. US Customs and Border Protection agents tracked him down and turned him over to federal authorities.
On April 29, 2026, Tinoco-Tieres was sentenced to 21 months in prison for reentry of a removed alien. He’ll also serve one year of supervised release and pay a $100 fine. After his release, he’ll be deported back to Guatemala.
US Attorney David I. Courcelle praised the work of Customs and Border Protection, calling it a ‘crucial’ part of keeping the country safe from violent crime.
