Package Thief in Custody
A 41-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree theft in connection with the theft of packages from homes in the 600 block of G Street NE in Washington DC on September 16, 2023. The suspect, Daniel Greene, was stopped by members of the Metropolitan Police Department while in possession of the stolen packages.
According to the government’s evidence, Greene approached homes in the 600 block of G Street NE and stole packages from the porches of two of them. He was stopped by members of the MPD while in possession of the stolen packages.
Greene is to be arraigned on Friday, October 13, 2023, at a hearing before a Superior Court judge. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, including a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in jail.
Greene has more than two prior theft convictions, though not from the same occasion, and therefore is subject to enhanced penalties for his alleged theft. The case is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah Skopicki.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty.
The Metropolitan Police Department has been cracking down on package thefts in the area, and this arrest is a significant blow to the crime wave. Residents are advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to secure their packages.
