Aaron Young, Armed Career Criminal, Rhode Island 2013
Aaron Young, Armed Career Criminal, Sentenced to 18 Years in Federal Prison
In a move aimed at keeping the streets of Providence safer, federal authorities have sent a notorious armed career criminal packing to the slammer. Aaron Young, 37, of Providence, was sentenced to 216 months in federal prison on federal drug trafficking and firearms charges. The harsh punishment comes after Young's guilty plea to one count each of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Young's troubles began in January 2013 when Providence Police arrested him as part of an investigation into his drug trafficking activities. The Providence Police and R.I. DEA drug task force executed court-authorized search warrants at Young's Providence residence on January 7, 2013, recovering a loaded 9mm handgun with 15 live rounds in the magazine and items used in the sale and distribution of cocaine.
Young was also ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. This is a significant victory for law enforcement and the community, who have long been plagued by Young's violent and illicit activities.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr., with the assistance of R.I. Assistant Attorney General Jim Baum. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the R.I. DEA drug task force assisted Providence Police in the investigation of this matter.
Young's long history of violent crime and drug trafficking makes him a prime example of the need for harsh punishment and effective law enforcement. His sentence serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar activities.
