Aboudou Waka, Resisting Deportation Orders, Louisiana 2018
A 34-year-old Togo national has been sentenced to six months in prison for resisting deportation orders twice after being ordered to depart the United States. Aboudou Waka, of Kpalime, Togo, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell on Wednesday to six months in prison for two counts of failure to depart.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations conducted the investigation into Waka's actions, which involved resisting attempts to escort him onto a commercial flight at the Alexandria International Airport. On March 13, 2017, and April 11, 2017, Waka hampered deportation efforts by verbally and physically resisting attempts to remove him from the country.
Assistant U.S. Attorney T. Forrest Phillips prosecuted the case against Waka, who was ultimately found guilty of two counts of failure to depart. The evidence presented at a two-day trial showed that Waka had been ordered to leave the country on two separate occasions but refused to comply with the deportation orders.
Waka's actions resulted in a lengthy and costly investigation, which was conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case against Waka is a prime example of the consequences of resisting deportation orders.
The sentencing of Aboudou Waka serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to resist deportation orders. The U.S. government will continue to take a tough stance on immigration crimes and will prosecute individuals who refuse to comply with deportation orders to the fullest extent of the law.
