A Jacksonville, Illinois man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for threatening the life of President Joe Biden and other government officials. Adam Ray Mouser, 40, of the 500 block of Brooklyn Avenue, was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment, to be followed by 24 months of supervised release, for threats against the President of the United States.

According to court documents, Mouser used social media to threaten violence against President Biden, his family, a former President, the Secretary of State, and various Members of Congress. Despite warnings from the U.S. Secret Service, Mouser continued to make threats, even after they visited his home.

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Colleen R. Lawless emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, 'words do matter' and warning that threatening to kill another individual is never acceptable. Judge Lawless noted that Mouser's threats were not only against President Biden but also against multiple victims in connection with the threat.

Mouser pleaded guilty on January 19, 2024, to a single count indictment. He has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since his arrest on August 28, 2023. The charges against Mouser carry a maximum penalty of up to five years imprisonment, up to three years supervised release, up to a $250,000 fine, and a $100 mandatory special assessment.

The investigation into Mouser's threats was led by the U.S. Secret Service, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Jacksonville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger represented the government in the prosecution. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the office of the President and the safety of government officials.

The sentence imposed on Mouser was significant, given the gravity of his actions. The court's decision sends a clear message that threatening the President or other government officials will not be tolerated. Mouser's 14-month prison sentence and 24 months of supervised release are a testament to the seriousness with which the court views such threats.

With this case now closed, the community can rest easier knowing that the perpetrator has been held accountable for his actions. The U.S. Secret Service and other agencies involved in the investigation have demonstrated their commitment to protecting government officials and the public from harm.

The case against Adam Ray Mouser serves as a reminder of the importance of online responsibility and the need to be mindful of the impact of our words on others. As Judge Lawless so aptly put it, 'words do matter,' and we must always strive to use them wisely.
