Adrian Hawkman, Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender, South Dakota 2019

Published October 10, 2019

Adrian Hawkman, a 35-year-old man from St. Francis, South Dakota, has been indicted for domestic assault by an habitual offender and child abuse. The indictment, which was filed in June 2019, alleges that Hawkman committed a domestic assault against a spouse or intimate partner on February 23, 2019, in Todd County, South Dakota.

At the time of the alleged domestic assault, Hawkman had at least two prior convictions for offenses that would have been, if subject to federal jurisdiction, an assault against a spouse or intimate partner. The indictment further alleges that Hawkman abused, exposed, tortured, tormented, and cruelly punished a child who had not attained the age of 18 on the same date.

On February 24, 2019, Hawkman allegedly forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated, and interfered with a corrections officer who was employed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. The conduct involved physical contact, according to the indictment.

Hawkman appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on October 8, 2019, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson is prosecuting the case. Hawkman has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
