Published August 9, 2023

On January 19, 2022, a street shooting on the Grand Concourse and East 198th Street in the Bronx, New York, left an 11-month-old baby in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the face. The shooting was allegedly carried out by Ahmed Altorie, a/k/a 'AK,' and Samuel Bautista, a/k/a 'Sammy,' who are accused of distributing narcotics and carrying firearms in connection with a drug trafficking operation based in the Bronx.

According to the indictment, Altorie, 36, and Bautista, 30, both of the Bronx, New York, were involved in a conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute both cocaine and crack cocaine from at least May 2018 through at least August 2023. The indictment also alleges that the defendants carried firearms in connection with the same, some of which were brandished and discharged, including the firearm that shot the infant.

Altorie and Bautista were arrested yesterday evening and today in an operation conducted by the FBI and NYPD. They are expected to be presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein later this afternoon.

The case is assigned to Chief U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, 'Safety is a civil right. And like all rights, in order to keep it, we have to enforce it. That is why I am proud to announce that we have arrested and indicted the two men who we allege shot that baby girl.'

The defendants are each charged with one count of narcotics conspiracy, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison; one count of using or carrying firearms during and in relation to, or possessing firearms in furtherance of, a drug trafficking crime, some of which were brandished and discharged, which carries a mandatory minimum consecutive sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison; and possessing ammunition after a felony conviction, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

As alleged in the Indictment, Altorie and Bautista's involvement in the conspiracy and their use of firearms led to the shooting of the 11-month-old baby. The emotional and physical trauma inflicted on the baby and its family will never be forgotten.

The people of New York deserve a safe and just community, and it is the duty of law enforcement to ensure that those who commit such heinous crimes are held accountable. The FBI and NYPD will continue to work tirelessly to remove violent drug traffickers from the streets and make our communities safer.

This case is a reminder that the consequences of engaging in violent crime are severe and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
