Podiatrist Charged with Health Care Fraud and Identity Theft
Aileen Gong, a 55-year-old podiatrist from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, has been charged with health care fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
According to the indictment, Gong submitted at least $480,000 in fraudulent claims to Medicare between 2009 and February 2014. The claims were for patient visits that never occurred, including visits that she claimed took place while she was outside of the United States. Gong also submitted claims for procedures that she did not perform on patients who did visit her office in Philadelphia.
The indictment alleges that Gong knowingly used the unique Medicare Beneficiary Number of patients without lawful authority as part of the scheme. If convicted, Gong faces a maximum possible sentence of 184 years in prison and a fine of $3.5 million.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Laurie Magid.
