South Carolina Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Stealing Deceased Wife’s Social Security Benefits

Tampa, Florida - In a shocking case of theft, 64-year-old Albert Bayer of South Carolina has been handed a one-year-and-one-day prison sentence for stealing his deceased wife’s Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits.

According to court documents, Bayer's wife, L.D., was receiving Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits before her untimely passing on March 31, 2015. However, her death was never reported to the Social Security Administration (SSA), allowing Bayer to access the funds meant for his late wife.

Between April 2015 and June 2023, Bayer used the stolen funds to pay for his personal expenses, resulting in a staggering $76,547 loss for the government.

The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, and prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler.

Bayer initially pleaded guilty to the charges in March 2024. As a result of his guilty plea, the court also entered an order of forfeiture in the amount of $76,547, the proceeds of the offense.

As the court delivers its verdict, it serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such heinous crimes. Bayer's actions not only betrayed the trust of the government but also the memory of his late wife.
