Alex Ulloa, Possessing a Prohibited Object, Pennsylvania 2022
SCRANTON, Pa. – In a shocking move, 46-year-old inmate Alex Ulloa has been charged with possessing a prohibited object, a Samsung cellphone, at the Federal Correctional Institute-Schuylkill in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the information alleges that on September 9, 2022, Ulloa possessed the cellphone, which is a clear violation of federal law.
Federal law makes the possession of cellphones by inmates in prison illegal due to security concerns that arise from unmonitored calls.
The matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Federal Bureau of Investigations, with United States Attorney Sean A. Camoni prosecuting the case.
Ulloa faces a maximum penalty of one year of imprisonment if found guilty. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Criminal informations are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.
The Federal Correctional Institute-Schuylkill is a maximum-security facility located in Minersville, Pennsylvania, and Ulloa's case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining security within our prison system.
We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
