Alexandros Yfantidis, Mail Fraud, Michigan 2011

Published March 19, 2015

A brazen scheme to collect insurance payouts has landed a Warren, Michigan businessman behind bars. Alexandros Yfantidis, 74, of Clinton Township, pleaded guilty to mail fraud after intentionally setting fire to his commercial laundry facility, Best Textile Services, on May 4, 2011.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Yfantidis made a fraudulent claim to his insurance company, collecting money for damages that never occurred. His greed put not only his own business at risk but also the safety of his community and the brave men and women who fought the blaze.

U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade praised the hard work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Warren Fire Department for their dedication in bringing Yfantidis to justice.

“Committing any fraud scheme harms victims, but intentionally setting a fire creates a danger to public safety that far exceeds the financial loss,” McQuade said.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Abed Hammoud. Yfantidis's sentencing is set for June 5.

Yfantidis's crimes have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only his own business but also the community at large. His actions demonstrate a callous disregard for the law and the safety of those around him.

The U.S. Attorney's Office is urging potential victims of the fire to contact the Victim Witness Coordinator at (313) 226-9633 or Tiesha Johnson of the ATF at (313) 202-3400 for information on restitution.

As the community continues to heal from the aftermath of the fire, Alexandros Yfantidis will face the consequences of his actions. His guilty plea is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and the justice system.

The case serves as a reminder that fraud and arson are serious crimes with severe consequences. Yfantidis's sentence will be determined at his upcoming hearing on June 5.
