Alfred Thornhill, Tampering with a Consumer Product, Mississippi 2014
A disturbing case of dairy product contamination has made its way to a Mississippi courtroom. On March 28, 2014, Alfred Thornhill, 42, of Sontag, Mississippi, was employed at a dairy farm near Crystal Springs, Mississippi, when he poured toxic chemicals into a container of milk.
The toxic chemicals, including chlorine, acid and bleach, were discovered in the milk by the farm’s owner just before the milk was to be picked up for transportation to a distribution center in New Orleans. A lab analysis conducted at Mississippi State University confirmed the presence of the caustic agents.
According to evidence disclosed during the guilty plea hearing, Thornhill confessed to USDA-OIG Special Agents that he poisoned the milk because he was angry at the dairy farm owner and intended to ruin the milk in order to financially harm the dairy farmer.
The case was investigated by the USDA- OIG and the Mississippi Agriculture Theft Bureau, with Assistant United States Attorney Scott Gilbert prosecuting the case. Thornhill was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III to 18 months in federal prison, which will be followed by one year of supervised release.
The court also ordered Thornhill to pay restitution in the amount of $1,000. Thornhill's actions put the dairy farm and its owner at risk of significant financial losses, highlighting the serious consequences of tampering with consumer products.
The sentencing of Alfred Thornhill serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly when those actions pose a threat to public health and safety.
Thornhill's case is a stark reminder that tampering with consumer products is a serious crime that can have devastating consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
