Former Joplin Teacher Accused of Sex Crime

Amanda Ruth Schweitzer, 38, of Joplin, has been charged with the disturbing crime of sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to the indictment, Schweitzer, a former teacher at North Middle School in Joplin, allegedly used a minor to produce child pornography from March 1 to March 29, 2017. The indictment also states that Schweitzer transferred obscene material to the minor during that time.

Garrison cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt.

Schweitzer was arrested and is currently in federal custody pending a detention hearing on January 30, 2018.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller. It was investigated by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force, the Joplin, Mo., Police Department and the FBI.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the federal government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
