Published November 18, 2014

A Tonawanda man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in distributing child pornography, according to federal authorities.

Andrew Ortman, 40, was convicted of distribution of child pornography and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara on Wednesday.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito, Jr., Ortman was caught by law enforcement officers on October 22, 2011, who downloaded eight video files from his computer that contained child pornography.

Officers then obtained a search warrant for Ortman's home and seized his computer, which was later found to contain over 600 images and videos of child pornography.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006.

Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, led the investigation under the direction of James C. Spero, Special Agent-In-Charge.

Ortman's sentencing is the culmination of an investigation that involved multiple agencies working together to bring a perpetrator of child pornography to justice.

This case highlights the importance of continued efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse through the use of technology and collaboration between law enforcement agencies.
