Published May 15, 2024

A 29-year-old Lansing man has been charged with felon in possession of firearms after an incident on April 10, 2024, left one of his would-be captors injured.

According to sources, Andrial Ched Ortiz repeatedly tried to steal police weapons from Lansing Police Department officers during his arrest. In the heat of the struggle, Ortiz possessed a Glock 43X, which he fired, injuring an LPD police officer working to apprehend him.

The injured officer's condition is currently unknown, but authorities praised the bravery and restraint displayed by the officers on the scene, saying that they were able to 'minimize the damage caused' and ensure everyone's safety.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten emphasized that the charge against Ortiz reflects the continued efforts to keep the streets safe from those who cannot lawfully possess firearms due to previous convictions.

The indictment alleges that Ortiz possessed two firearms on April 10, 2024, when he could not lawfully do so following a previous felony conviction. His initial appearance in the Western District of Michigan is set for Monday, May 20, 2024.

Gun violence remains an acute problem across the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. firearm homicide rate in 2021 was the highest documented since 1993, with numbers remaining high even after a slight decline since 2021.

This case was investigated by the Lansing Police Department, Michigan State Police, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and the local community.

The charges in an indictment are merely accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
