Angel Gonzalez-Reyes, Felon in Possession of Firearm and Ammunition, New York 2019

Published October 9, 2019

In a disturbing display of disregard for the law, Angel Gonzalez-Reyes, a 27-year-old Rochester resident, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition in a shocking case of blatant disregard for the law.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, and a fine of $250,000, or both. This conviction is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who refuse to abide by the law.

Gonzalez-Reyes was arrested on June 15, 2019, after New York State Police troopers attempted a routine traffic stop of a car he was driving in Rochester. Gonzalez-Reyes fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase that ended with his vehicle crashing into a yard on Kohlman Street. Despite his attempts to escape, he was apprehended by Rochester Police Department officers in the area.

During the search of his vehicle, officers discovered a .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol and ammunition, further incriminating Gonzalez-Reyes in the face of overwhelming evidence.

This plea deal is a direct result of the United States Attorney's Office's Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This program has proven to be effective in reducing violent crime rates by focusing on the most pressing issues in the community and working together with stakeholders to develop comprehensive solutions.

The investigation was led by the New York State Police, the Rochester Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, all of whom played a crucial role in bringing this case to justice.

Gonzalez-Reyes's sentencing is scheduled for January 22, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the law and the consequences that come with breaking it. We urge all members of our community to take this case as a cautionary tale and to make amends for any past mistakes.
