Sexual Abuse and Habitual Domestic Violence in Little Eagle

Pierre, South Dakota - In a shocking turn of events, Anthony Bobtail Bear, a 43-year-old man from Little Eagle, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for Habitual Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse.

The sentencing took place on September 19, 2023, after a lengthy trial and investigation by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, Standing Rock Agency.

According to court documents, Anthony Bobtail Bear was convicted of physically and sexually abusing the mother of his child at a home in Little Eagle. The victim sustained bruising to her head, suffered a loss of consciousness during the abuse, and ultimately required surgery to repair the injuries she sustained from the abuse.

This is not the first time Anthony Bobtail Bear has been involved in a violent relationship. In fact, this is his fifth conviction for assaulting the victim, and sixth conviction for domestic violence against his dating partners.

The Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in Federal court as opposed to State court.

Anthony Bobtail Bear was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately following the sentencing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, and U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann handed down the sentence.

In addition to the 17-year prison sentence, Anthony Bobtail Bear was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

This case highlights the serious consequences of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and serves as a reminder that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
