Anthony Crenshaw, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Indiana 2021

In a shocking display of disregard for the law, 26-year-old Anthony Crenshaw of Indianapolis, Indiana, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Crenshaw's troubles began on February 4, 2021, when he became stranded in a snowbank outside a White Castle in Hammond, Indiana. Officers arrived at the scene to find Crenshaw dazed and lethargic, but things quickly took a turn for the worse when they noticed a bulge in his sweatshirt pocket.

As Crenshaw stepped out of the vehicle, officers observed him produce a semi-automatic firearm, along with 26 rounds of ammunition in an extended magazine. It was then that they discovered Crenshaw's prior felony conviction for burglary resulting in bodily injury, which prohibits him from possessing a firearm or ammunition.

An investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with the assistance of the Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force and the Hammond Police Department, led to Crenshaw's guilty plea and subsequent sentencing.

Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin M. Padula prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.

Crenshaw's sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law, particularly for those with prior convictions. As the community continues to grapple with the issue of gun violence, cases like Crenshaw's will only add to the urgency of finding solutions.
