Anthony Fisher, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Iowa 2021

Published January 27, 2023

A Cedar Rapids man has been found guilty of unlawfully possessing ammunition after shooting a Marion man eight times in February 2021.

Anthony Fisher, 23, was convicted of one count of possession of ammunition by a felon after a four-day trial in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

The evidence presented at trial showed that Fisher and two other men broke into a home in Marion with the intent of stealing money and possibly marijuana on February 16, 2021. Fisher shot the victim eight times immediately after the three men entered the residence.

Law enforcement responded quickly and provided aid to the victim, who survived. The three men, including Fisher, fled the scene. The jury found Fisher unlawfully possessed the eight rounds of ammunition used to shoot the victim.

At the time of the shooting, Fisher was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition because he was a felon. He had previously been convicted of interference with official acts – dangerous weapon, a felony offense, in state court in April 2020.

Fisher faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and not more than three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand will be set after a presentence report is prepared.

Fisher remains in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Dillan Edwards and Tony Morfitt and was investigated by the Marion Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
