In a shocking case of identity theft, a New York resident has been caught using false identification cards to negotiate counterfeit checks at casinos along the East Coast of the United States. Anthony L. Powell, 35, of Rochester, NY, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of identity theft.

Between January 2015 and June 2015, Powell used false identification cards to negotiate counterfeit checks totaling approximately $24,000 at casinos, including the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The investigation revealed that Powell's scheme was designed to deceive casino staff and security systems, allowing him to cash in on fake checks.

According to the charges, Powell's actions constituted identity theft, a serious federal offense. The court was advised that Powell's guilty plea was made in connection with the charge of identity theft. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced the plea agreement, which was accepted by United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer.

The investigation was led by Agents from Homeland Security Investigations and the Pennsylvania State Police, who worked tirelessly to uncover Powell's scheme. The team's dedication and expertise were instrumental in bringing Powell to justice.

The law provides for a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and Powell's criminal history, if any.

Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The sentencing is scheduled for June 25, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. The outcome of the trial will determine Powell's fate, but one thing is clear: this identity thief will face justice for his crimes.

The federal authorities have made it clear that identity theft will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such crimes will face severe consequences. Powell's guilty plea is a testament to the effective work of law enforcement and the justice system in bringing perpetrators to account.

The case will serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar schemes. The consequences of identity theft are severe, and the authorities will continue to work tirelessly to prevent and investigate such crimes.
