Anthony Rodriguez, Jr. (32, Orange Park) made headlines when he was caught shoplifting from a retail store in Clay County. But what happened next would land him in even hotter water. According to court records, on May 11, 2024, store personnel stopped Rodriguez and deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office subsequently responded. As deputies searched Rodriguez incident to his arrest, a loaded Glock 43 9mm pistol fell on to the ground from Rodriguez’s clothing.

At the time of the incident, Rodriguez had seven prior felony convictions, including two involving a firearm and ammunition. As a previously convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

Rodriguez has since pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a charge that carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in federal prison. He also faces forfeiture of the Glock pistol and ammunition found on his person.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and focused law enforcement efforts.

Rodriguez made his initial appearance in federal court on July 9, 2024, and was ordered detained. The case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Jacksonville Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein.
