Buffalo Man Sentenced to 70 Months in Prison for Heroin Conspiracy

A Buffalo man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in a heroin conspiracy that brought kilograms of the deadly drug to Western New York.

Antonio Almonte, 57, of Buffalo, was convicted of conspiring to possess and distribute more than one kilogram of heroin, according to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr.

The investigation into Almonte's activities began in March 2012, when the Ohio State Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop and search that uncovered 2.4 kilograms of heroin in a truck and trailer bound for Buffalo from Chicago.

Almonte, along with co-defendant Luis Vazquez and others, was transporting the heroin from Chicago for distribution in the Buffalo area, authorities said.

Vazquez, 51, was sentenced in May 2013 to 51 months in prison for conspiring to possess and distribute more than one kilogram of heroin, according to court records.

The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, officials said.
