Antonio Bishop, Attempt To Introduce Narcotics And Tobacco Into A Federal Prison, Pennsylvania 2021

Published December 16, 2021

SCRANTON - Antonio Bishop, age 37, an inmate at United States Penitentiary, Canaan (USP Canaan), Waymart, Pennsylvania, found himself in hot water after a federal grand jury indicted him on December 14, 2021, on charges related to an attempt to introduce narcotics and tobacco into a federal prison.

According to the indictment, Bishop allegedly attempted to provide suboxone and amphetamines, narcotic controlled substances, to inmates, and to possess and obtain tobacco, all of which is considered contraband in a federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigation Section (SIS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean A. Camoni is prosecuting the case.

Bishop's alleged actions have sparked a federal investigation, with the SIS and FBI working tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The indictment serves as a stark reminder of the severity of introducing contraband into a federal prison and the potential consequences that follow.

It's essential to note that indictments and Criminal Informations are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The maximum total penalty under federal law for these offenses is 20 years, 6 months of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is also required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant's educational, vocational and medical needs.

For these reasons, the statutory maximum penalty for the offense is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant.
