Florida Men Sentenced to Prison for Exporting Stolen Outboard Engines
Miami, Florida - In a brazen scheme, Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez, both residents of South Florida, orchestrated the exportation of over 600 stolen outboard engines to Mexico through two Miami-based freight forwarding companies.
The stolen engines, valued at more than $12 million, were obtained by the defendants from various sources between 2015 and 2019. Before exporting the engines, the co-conspirators affixed false serial number stickers on the engines.
Antonio Perez Toledo, 40, of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Brian Perez, 43, of Homestead, Florida, were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the transnational conspiracy. Antonio Perez Toledo received a 48-month prison sentence, while Brian Perez was sentenced to 40 months in prison.
The sentencing hearings were held before U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams. Judge Williams also ordered the defendants to forfeit the proceeds they each received from the scheme, and to pay restitution to the identifiable victims.
According to the investigation, Antonio Perez Toledo and Brian Perez each personally arranged to export approximately $1 million worth of stolen engines. The case was investigated by HSI Miami and CGIS, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana Maria Martinez prosecuted the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Daren Grove handled asset forfeiture. The sentences were announced by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Special Agents in Charge Anthony Salisbury and Matthew J. Margelot.
