A Bronx Man Charged With Kidnapping Girlfriend And Child, Faces Life in Prison
Aquilino Torres, a Bronx man, was charged with kidnapping his girlfriend and her 7-year-old child in a brutal crime that has left the community shaken. According to the allegations, Torres approached his girlfriend in Harlem on October 5, 2020, and threatened to kill her child if she didn't come with him.
Torres then took his girlfriend and child to a motel in the Bronx, where he physically assaulted his girlfriend, including punching her several times in the face and body. He also had sex with her against her will. The following day, Torres directed his girlfriend to order an Uber to take them to an apartment in Washington Heights, where they were held captive for multiple days.
During their captivity, Torres physically assaulted both his girlfriend and her child, and tied his girlfriend's hands to a bed frame to prevent her from leaving. His girlfriend and child were finally able to escape on October 10, 2020, and she was subsequently hospitalized for a broken jaw that required surgery.
Torres is charged with one count of kidnapping, which carries a maximum term of life in prison, and one count of kidnapping of a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum term of 20 years in prison and a maximum term of life. He will be presented in Manhattan federal court later today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stewart D. Aaron.
Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI and NYPD, in particular, the Violent Crimes Task Force. The prosecution of this case is being handled by the Office's General Crimes Unit. Assistant United States Attorney David Robles is in charge of the prosecution.
The charges against Torres are a stark reminder of the horrors of kidnapping and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As the community comes to terms with this crime, it is clear that justice will be served, and Torres will face the consequences of his actions. The case is a testament to the bravery of the victims, who have shown remarkable resilience in the face of unimaginable trauma.
Torres's next court appearance will be in Manhattan federal court, where he will face the charges against him. The community can rest assured that the FBI and NYPD will continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and their families.
