Aric T. Branch, 34, and Crystal Sunshine Smith, 35, Indicted on Counterfeit Charges

Scranton, PA - In a brazen scheme to deceive retailers, Aric T. Branch, 34, of Queens, New York and Crystal Sunshine Smith, 35, of Holbrook, New York, were indicted on charges of conspiracy to pass, receive, and deal in counterfeit United States Federal Reserve Notes.

According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, the duo traveled from New York to Dickson City, Pennsylvania in May 2013 with the intent to pass the counterfeit notes at various retailers, including J.C. Penney and Target Department Stores.

The indictment charges Branch and Smith with aiding and abetting each other in the passing, receiving, and dealing in counterfeit notes. The case was jointly investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Dickson City Police Department.

Prosecution of the case has been assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Olshefski. Indictments and Criminal Informations are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed to be innocent unless and until found guilty in court.

A sentence following a finding of guilty is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The maximum penalty under the federal statute is 45 years' imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

In a statement, United States Attorney Peter J. Smith emphasized the severity of the charges and the potential consequences of the crime. 'These individuals thought they could deceive retailers and get away with it, but they are now facing serious charges and potential prison time,' he said.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and taking steps to protect against counterfeiting and other financial crimes.
