Arlington Public Schools Settles with DOJ Over English Learner Program Violations
Arlington Public Schools has agreed to settle with the U.S. government over allegations of violating the rights of English learner students, according to a recent agreement.
The settlement, reached with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Civil Rights Division, requires the district to bolster English language services for its approximately 5,000 students who are not proficient in English.
Under the agreement, the district will properly identify and place English learner students, provide English as a Second Language instruction, adequately train teachers, and ensure that English learner students are timely and appropriately evaluated for special education services.
The agreement stems from an investigation under the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974, which the U.S. government has described as a top priority.
Arlington Public Schools, which serves 34 schools in the district, will also properly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of its English learner programs over time.
Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband praised Arlington Public Schools for working with the government to achieve a 'promising and positive result' for English learners.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said the settlement ensures that English learner students in Arlington Public Schools receive the services they need to succeed.
