Illegal Gun Possession Lands Mexican National Behind Bars
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A shocking incident of shots fired at a residence has led to the indictment of a Mexican national for illegal gun possession. Armando Rivera-Sereno, 41, has been charged with two counts of illegally possessing firearms, one as a convicted felon and the other as an illegal alien.
According to charging documents, on Sept. 9, 2024, Columbus police officers responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on Holly Hill Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Rivera-Sereno in the garage, where they found a pistol, loaded magazine, rifle, box of ammunition, spent shell casing, suspected narcotics, and numerous empty beer cans.
Rivera-Sereno, who has also gone by Armando Rivera-Sanchez and Alejandro Aguirre, has a history of unlawful reentry into the United States. He was convicted in 2022 of reentering the country as an illegal alien, having been removed five times prior to his arrest in that case.
The two-count indictment, announced by United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio Dominick S. Gerace II, Jorge Rosendo, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), and Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant, carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison for each charge.
Assistant Deputy Criminal Chief Brian J. Martinez will represent the United States in this case. This indictment is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling the invasion of illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
An indictment merely contains allegations, and Rivera-Sereno is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
