Albuquerque Man Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a shocking turn of events, 50-year-old Arturo Archuleta of Albuquerque has pleaded guilty to five counts of tax evasion. According to sources, Archuleta will remain on conditions of release pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
Archuleta, who worked as an office manager at ABQ Injury Clinic, a chiropractic medicine practice in Albuquerque, derived approximately $200,000 from his role between 2014 and 2018. During this period, he also took checks made out to ABQ Injury Clinic and diverted them to a separate bank account he controlled. What's more, Archuleta did not report any of his income to the IRS between 2014 and April of 2019 and took affirmative acts to avoid creating records of the income.
The tax evasion offenses carry a statutory maximum sentence of five years of imprisonment. However, according to the terms of his plea agreement, Archuleta faces up to two years of imprisonment at sentencing.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Taylor F. Hartstein is prosecuting the case.
The plea agreement has left many in the community stunned. 'We take these kinds of cases very seriously,' said a spokesperson for the IRS. 'Tax evasion is a serious crime that affects us all.'
Archuleta's sentencing has not been scheduled yet. In the meantime, he will remain on conditions of release. The community is waiting with bated breath to see what the consequences will be for this shocking case of tax evasion.
