Austin Bollinger, Army Humvee Theft, Ohio 2017

A high-stakes heist landed two Trumbull County men in hot water – literally. Austin Bollinger, a 22-year-old from Brookfield, and Daniel Thompson, a 22-year-old from Girard, are facing charges for stealing a U.S. Army Humvee.

The theft occurred on March 18, 2017, when Bollinger allegedly swiped a High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), Model M1165A1, from government property. The vehicle is valued at a significant amount, but the exact figure was not provided.

According to the indictment, Bollinger and Thompson retained and concealed the stolen vehicle from March 19 to March 24, 2017, with the intent to convert it for Bollinger’s own use. If convicted, the defendants’ sentences will be determined by the court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including their prior criminal records and roles in the offense.

The investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial, where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Bollinger faces one count each of theft of government property and receiving stolen government property, while Thompson is charged with receiving stolen government property. If convicted, they could face significant prison time.

The defendants are currently awaiting their day in court. Until then, the Humvee remains in the custody of the authorities.
