Boston Man Sentenced for Identity Theft

Basil Ledgister, a 41-year-old Jamaican national, was sentenced to 26 months in prison for identity theft in Boston, Massachusetts.

According to court records, Ledgister falsely represented that a Social Security number belonging to another person was his in an application for a license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in January 2015. This act of false representation is a serious crime that has consequences for the victim.

Ledgister was charged with one count of misuse of a Social Security number and one count of aggravated identity theft. He pleaded guilty to these charges in May 2018.

The investigation into Ledgister's crimes was a collaborative effort between the United States Attorney's Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, and the Massachusetts State Police.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Richardson of Lelling's Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

Ledgister's sentence is a result of his conviction on the charges of misuse of a Social Security number and aggravated identity theft. His case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting personal information and the consequences of committing identity theft.
