Booker Deon McKinney, Ammunition Possession, Iowa 2023

A Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for possessing ammunition while using drugs, a crime that puts communities at risk.

Booker Deon McKinney, 24, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was given the prison term after pleading guilty to possession of ammunition by a drug user on June 7, 2023.

According to evidence presented at sentencing, McKinney was found with a privately made firearm, also known as a ghost gun, with an extended magazine loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition on April 17, 2021. His DNA was located on the firearm, and he later admitted to handling the weapon.

McKinney also admitted to handling a firearm in 2022 that was used in an incident where shots were fired in the area around his parents' residence. He was convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Domestic Abuse, Strangulation in a separate case.

As part of his sentence, McKinney will serve 120 months' imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence.

McKinney is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. His sentence will run consecutive to his state conviction in the strangulation case.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the Marion Police Department.
