Anchorage Man Found Guilty of Methamphetamine Trafficking in Historic Conviction

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – In a shocking turn of events, Boonchan Yang, a/k/a ‘Chowmein’, 22, of Anchorage, Alaska, has been found guilty of two drug trafficking crimes that left the community reeling.

Yang was convicted by a jury after a mere hour of deliberation, bringing to an end a lengthy and meticulous investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, IRS Criminal Investigations, and the Anchorage Police Department.

The evidence presented in court revealed that Yang was involved in a staggering $1100 worth of methamphetamine distribution on June 19, 2014. Four months later, on October 3, 2014, Yang attempted to sell an entire ounce of methamphetamine for $1700, resulting in his conviction for felony possession with the intent to distribute.

Prosecutors revealed that Yang had arranged to sell half an ounce of methamphetamine and an AK-47 to an informant on June 19, 2014. This brazen deal was captured on record, as Yang had texted and spoken with the informant to arrange the sale. Moreover, law enforcement had videotaped the deal itself, allowing the trial jury to witness Yang’s guilt firsthand.

Yang’s second conviction was secured after law enforcement confronted him with an ounce of methamphetamine in his car on October 3, 2014. When questioned, Yang attempted to hide the drugs inside the vehicle, but to no avail. A digital scale and dime baggies used for distribution were also found in the car.

Senior United States District Court Judge H. Russel Holland will preside over Yang’s sentencing, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on July 7. Yang faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a statutory maximum sentence of up to 40 years.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin R. Feldis praised the investigative efforts of the agencies involved, stating, ‘Their tireless work has led to Yang’s conviction and a safer community for all Alaskans.’
