Ex-St. Louis Cop Guilty of Mail Fraud

A former St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer has pleaded guilty to three counts of mail fraud for swindling taxpayer dollars from a local business district.

Brad Stephens, a 7-year veteran of the force, admitted to making false representations to the Tower Grove South Concerned Citizen Special Business District about the hours he worked as a security patrol officer. The district paid Stephens' private employer, City Wide Security, approximately $50,000 in taxpayer funds based on his false claims.

According to the plea agreement, Stephens worked as a police officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department since October 6, 2014. He was employed by City Wide Security beginning in approximately 2015 to provide off-duty security patrols in the Tower Grove South Neighborhood.

During 2018, Stephens claimed to have worked 93 days, and in 2019, he said he worked 76 days. However, the investigation revealed that Stephens did not actually work those assigned days and shifts.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 11, 2022. Stephens, 7-year veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, faces the consequences of his actions.
