A 38-year-old McLaughlin man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for assaulting his mother, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Brady James Claymore was sentenced on December 4, 2025, by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a federal crime that occurred on December 26, 2024.

According to the indictment, Claymore was drinking alcohol at his mother's home in McLaughlin, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation when his mother reproved him. Claymore became upset, placed his hands around her neck and squeezed, causing her to incur a broken nose and fractured teeth when they both tumbled down a short flight of steps.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case.

Claymore was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2025 and pleaded guilty on September 16, 2025. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

As part of his sentence, Claymore was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and will serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.

This case was prosecuted in federal court under the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates the prosecution of certain violent crimes in Indian Country.
