ALBANY, NY – Brandon Prawl, 28, of Schenectady, New York, is headed to federal prison for seven years after a jury found him guilty of peddling heroin and illegally packing a .45 caliber pistol. Prawl was sentenced today to 84 months behind bars, a stiff penalty for a low-level dealer who apparently thought a firearm would protect his operation.
The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and New York State Police, detailed four heroin sales conducted by Prawl from a Schenectady residence in September 2019. The jig was up October 4th, when authorities raided the same location, finding Prawl in possession of over 21 grams of heroin, a loaded .45, and the tools of a street-level drug operation. The evidence clearly showed Prawl wasn’t just holding the heroin – he was moving it.
The three-day jury trial concluded November 9, 2022, with a guilty verdict on charges of distributing heroin, possessing heroin with the intent to distribute, and, critically, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. That last charge adds significant weight, signaling to federal prosecutors that Prawl’s actions weren’t just about narcotics, but about escalating the risk of violence in the community.
U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby didn’t show leniency. In addition to the 84-month prison sentence, Prawl will face a three-year term of supervised release after he gets out, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashlyn Miranda and Emmet O’Hanlon successfully prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on both physical evidence and witness testimony.
Federal officials are framing Prawl’s conviction as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. While PSN often targets larger-scale operations, this case illustrates its reach extends to those who use firearms to facilitate even smaller drug trades. The program emphasizes a combined approach of focused law enforcement and community-based prevention programs.
The ATF’s Special Agent in Charge, John B. DeVito, and New York State Police Acting Superintendent Steven A. Nigrelli, both issued statements highlighting the collaborative effort that led to Prawl’s sentencing. While the press release touts a victory for law enforcement, the reality is another young man will spend years in prison, and the flow of heroin into Schenectady will likely continue, fueled by others eager to take Prawl’s place. The cycle continues.
