Convicted Felon Sentenced to 84 Months in Prison for Possessing Stolen Firearm

A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for possessing a stolen firearm, announced United States Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

Brandon Xavier Coyour, 31, was sentenced to 84 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release for possessing a stolen firearm. The crime occurred on June 23, 2021, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to court documents, Minneapolis Police officers responded to a shots fired call and witnessed Coyour fleeing the scene. As he fled, Coyour pulled a gun from his waistband and hid it in the wheel well of a parked car. Officers recovered the gun, a Springfield XD-9 9mm semiautomatic handgun, which had been reported stolen one month prior by its owner in Menominee, Wisconsin. Coyour, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

Coyour pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a stolen firearm on April 12, 2022. Senior Judge Paul A. Magnuson handed down the sentence, emphasizing that convicted felons “will pay a very steep penalty” for possessing firearms.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Minneapolis Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson prosecuted the case.

Coyour's sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the importance of holding convicted felons accountable for possessing firearms. The outcome of this case demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. Attorney's Office to reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
