A 64-year-old Oahu man has been found guilty of sending e-mail threats to bomb buildings in Utah and across the United States.
Brian Melvin Brandenburg, a former Utah resident, was convicted of seven counts of sending e-mail threats to bomb buildings, including the 3rd District Courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah.
According to evidence presented at trial, Brandenburg sent the threatening e-mails on May 4 and 6, 2022, to various recipients in Utah, including employees involved in his then-pending divorce case.
The defendant told the FBI that he 'wanted to get their attention.'
Brandenburg faces a maximum sentence of 20 years for Count 1 and 10 years for each of Counts 2-7. Sentences will be imposed based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Provo Police Department, and the University of Utah Police department conducted the investigation that resulted in this conviction.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys KeAupuni Akina and Darren W.K. Ching prosecuted the case.
Brandenburg will remain in custody pending his sentencing, set for November 9, 2023.
