PHOENIX, Ariz. - In a shocking turn of events, Brian Riggs, 51, of Jeddito, Arizona, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a brutal murder on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation.
The crime took place on February 16, 2019, when emergency medical services responded to a home on the reservation, where they found the victim deceased and suffering from injuries over their entire body. Riggs, who was the only other person present at the home, was subsequently arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder.
The investigation into the crime was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tracy Van Buskirk and Brian Kasprzyk, District of Arizona, Phoenix, handled the prosecution.
According to court documents, Riggs was involved in an intimate relationship with the victim at the time of the murder. The motive behind the crime remains unclear, but one thing is certain - the community will never be the same.
The sentencing, which took place recently, was handed down by United States District Judge Michael T. Liburdi. Riggs will be required to serve 30 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
