Burlington, Vermont - In a shocking turn of events, Bryan McMahon, 31, of Burlington, was sentenced to 32 months in prison for Interference with Commerce by Robbery.
The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that McMahon was sentenced by Chief District Judge Christina Reiss. This sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.
According to court records, McMahon admitted to committing three pharmacy robberies in Burlington. The first robbery occurred on December 18, 2014, at the Lakeside Pharmacy on Pearl Street in Burlington, Vermont.
During this robbery, McMahon was dressed in a unique disguise, wearing ski goggles, a surgical mask, gloves, and a Santa Claus hat. He obtained Oxycontin and Methadone by threatening the pharmacist, stating 'I've got something for you' while gesturing to his waist area.
Just over a year later, on April 3, 2015, McMahon struck again at the same pharmacy. This time, he wore aviator-style sunglasses, a surgical mask, and rubber gloves. McMahon obtained Methadone by threatening the pharmacist, stating 'I'm armed; I'll shoot you; they won't give it to me at the hospital.'
McMahon's third and final robbery took place on April 27, 2015, at the Rite Aid Pharmacy on North Avenue in Burlington, Vermont. He was dressed in an orange vest, surgical mask, and rubber gloves. McMahon approached the pharmacy counter, demanded Methadone, and stated 'quickly, I have something.'
After exiting the pharmacy, McMahon was confronted by Burlington Police Officers in Ethan Allen Park. A search of McMahon's jacket revealed the two stolen bottles of Methadone. Additionally, an orange vest and surgical mask were recovered near the pharmacy. DNA testing by the Vermont Forensic Laboratory confirmed that McMahon's DNA was on both items.
The investigative efforts of the Burlington Police Department, the Vermont Forensic Laboratory, and the Drug Enforcement Administration were commended by United States Attorney Eric S. Miller. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Ophardt represented the United States, while Assistant Federal Defender Steven L. Barth, Esq., represented McMahon.
The United States Attorney's Office commended the bravery and dedication of the Burlington Police Department and the other agencies involved in the case.
