Brycen Scott Beal, Marijuana Robbery, Virginia 2023
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - In a shocking turn of events, Brycen Scott Beal, 19, was sentence to 10 years and 1 day in prison for shooting another man during a marijuana robbery.
According to court documents, Beal arranged a meeting to purchase a small amount of marijuana from D.M. on February 21, 2023. However, Beal had ulterior motives and instead grabbed a backpack containing approximately 6.5 ounces of marijuana from D.M.'s vehicle.
As Beal ran off, he fired three gunshots at D.M. using a Glock 23 .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun. Two of the shots penetrated the windshield, and one hit D.M. in the leg, seriously injuring him.
D.M. managed to drive off and report the incident, which led to the Newport News Police (NNPD) deploying medical services to aid D.M. and reporting to the scene.
Through the course of the investigation, NNPD confirmed Beal was the shooter using security camera footage and forensically matching the firearm seized from Beal's residence with the three shell casings recovered from the scene.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter G. Osyf and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyssa Levey-Weinstein prosecuted the case.
Brycen Scott Beal was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson. The charges against Beal include, but are not limited to, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and interstate transportation of a firearm. The crime took place in Newport News, Virginia.
