Local Man Sentenced for Buying Gun for Ex-Con
BOISE – In a shocking case of firearm trafficking, Caleb Matthias Curtis, 29, of Payette, Idaho, was handed down a three-year probation sentence for his role in purchasing a rifle for a convicted felon.
According to federal prosecutors, Curtis knowingly sold the .30-06 hunting rifle to his neighbor, David McAlister, who had a prior statutory rape conviction making him ineligible to own a firearm.
The rifle was purchased in October 2013 using money provided by McAlister and was then handed over to the convicted felon.
The case was investigated by the Payette County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Curtis’ actions were part of a larger scheme to undermine Idaho’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Program, which aims to curb gun violence in the state.
McAlister was sentenced to three years of probation, six months of jail credit, and a $1,500 fine for his own crimes.
U.S. District Court Judge Edward J. Lodge also ordered Curtis to complete 60 hours of community service in lieu of paying a fine.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun trafficking and the importance of enforcing strict laws to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.
