Cameron Summers, Tax Fraud, Wisconsin 2026
A tax preparer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to prison for his role in a tax fraud scheme. Cameron Summers, 30, worked at a tax preparation business in Milwaukee, filing over 400 individual income tax returns for clients between 2020 and 2022.
According to court records, Summers used his name, preparer tax identification number, and business name to file the returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He claimed false expenses, credits, and refunds to which his clients were not entitled, resulting in a loss of over $1.1 million to the IRS.
The scheme involved inflating refund amounts by including false business expenses, Sick and Family Leave Credits, Fuel Credits, and Educational Tax Credits. Summers even made notations on some returns stating that he had 'boosted' the refund amount. During an interview with the IRS, Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI), Summers admitted to using whatever numbers were available to maximize the credits and get a big refund.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel stated, 'When someone commits tax fraud, they are stealing from all Americans who work hard and pay their taxes honestly.' He added that anyone who commits fraud should expect to be sent to the federal penitentiary, like this defendant.
U.S. District Judge Brett Ludwig sentenced Summers to one year and one day in prison for two counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, in violation of 26 U.S.C. § 7206(2). The judge also ordered Summers to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution and serve one year of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the IRS-CI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. Scully. The Department of Justice's work to combat fraud supports President Trump's Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, a whole-of-government effort chaired by Vice President J.D. Vance to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse within Federal benefit programs.
