Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Gun Possession

A 41-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm.

Carlos Dejuan Hutchinson, a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

According to information disclosed at sentencing, Hutchinson was stopped by police on October 12, 2019, and a pistol was found in his pocket. He attempted to dispose of a methamphetamine pipe while in custody.

Hutchinson admitted that he possessed the firearm while using methamphetamine and had previously been convicted of three burglaries. As a result, he faced a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence due to his prior burglary convictions.

Hutchinson was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, which includes representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime, and Project Guardian, a Department of Justice initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
