Carlos Gregorio Santos, Illegal Reentry, Rhode Island 2024
PROVIDENCE, RI – A convicted sex offender was sentenced to federal prison for illegally reentering the United States.
Carlos Gregorio Santos, 52, was sentenced to twelve months and one day in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, announced United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha.
According to information presented to the court, Santos was arrested by Providence Police on September 29, 2023, following an investigation into an alleged altercation between himself and another man over a dispute about wages.
At the time of his arrest, in an apparent effort to shield his true identity, the defendant provided police with a false name and false date of birth. The FBI later confirmed his real identity.
Santos pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on February 15, 2024, to a charge of illegal reentry after removal. He was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy to twelve months and one day in prison to be followed by one year of federal supervised release.
Santos faces deportation upon completion of his current term of incarceration.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie M. White.
The matter was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement, with the assistance of the FBI and Providence Police Department.
