Caroline Sheehan, Adulteration of Fentanyl, Massachusetts 2024
Former Nurse Sentenced for Adulterating Fentanyl at Massachusetts Hospital
BOSTON - In a shocking case of healthcare fraud, Caroline Sheehan, a 39-year-old former nurse from Lowell, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to three years of probation for adulterating fentanyl at a local hospital.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Sheehan pleaded guilty to one count of adulteration of a prescription drug with intent to defraud and mislead in February 2024. The crime was committed in March 2021 while Sheehan was working at the hospital.
Sheehan's actions were discovered when a hospital employee noticed a blood stain on an IV bag containing fentanyl solution. Laboratory testing confirmed that the bag contained less than the declared concentration of fentanyl, leading to an investigation into the adulterated medication.
During the investigation, Sheehan admitted to removing fentanyl from the IV bag and replacing it with saline solution to avoid getting caught. She also confessed to stealing prescription drugs from the hospital for months to feed her substance abuse addiction.
U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley sentenced Sheehan to three years of probation and prohibited her from working as a registered nurse or accessing prescription narcotics.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Begg Lawrence, Chief of the Health Care Fraud Unit, and was announced by Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy; Fernando McMillan, Special Agent in Charge of the Food and Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigations; Robert Coviello, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General; and Robert H. Goldstein, MD, PhD, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of healthcare fraud and the importance of vigilance in the healthcare industry. As a former nurse, Sheehan's actions were a betrayal of the trust placed in her and a threat to the safety of patients.
In light of this case, it is essential for healthcare providers to maintain the highest standards of integrity and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
