Local Man Convicted of Sex Abuse

A federal jury in Rapid City, South Dakota, has delivered a guilty verdict against Charles 'CJ' Good Voice Elk, 29, of Kyle, South Dakota, for the sex abuse of a minor. Elk was accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a juvenile victim in January 2018.

The verdict was handed down on April 1, 2021, following a federal jury trial. The evidence presented during the trial established that Elk's actions met the criteria for the crime of sexual abuse and abuse of a minor.

The investigation into Good Voice Elk's actions was a collaborative effort between the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Sazama prosecuted and tried the case.

The convicted individual is facing a sentence of up to life in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. In addition to the prison time and fine, Good Voice Elk is also required to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and may be ordered to pay restitution.

Following the guilty verdict, Elk was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing. A sentencing date will be scheduled at a later time.
