Charles Cordier, Assaulting a Federal Officer, South Dakota 2020

A 21-year-old St. Francis man has been charged with Assaulting a Federal Officer in a disturbing incident that took place in Rosebud, South Dakota.

According to the indictment, Charles Cordier, III, forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated, and interfered with a law enforcement officer employed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services on November 5, 2019.

The officer was allegedly subjected to the use of a dangerous weapon during the assault. Cordier, 21, was arrested and remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.

Charles Cordier, III, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on August 19, 2020, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The charge of Assaulting a Federal Officer is a serious offense that carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case.
