A shocking case of embezzlement has come to light in Leavenworth, Kansas, where a former bank teller has pleaded guilty to stealing over $125,000 from his employer.
Charles Lee Staples, 42, of Leavenworth, admitted in court to one count of embezzlement by a bank employee, a serious crime that has left many in the community stunned.
According to the U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister, Staples was a teller at Mutual Savings Association in Leavenworth when he committed the crime. An audit revealed that he had taken the money from his teller drawer, and to cover up his tracks, he made false entries in bank reports.
The crime was committed while Staples was working at the bank, and he has since agreed to pay back the full amount of the theft, a total of $125,000.
The sentencing hearing for Staples is set for April 22, and both parties have agreed to recommend a sentence of three years on supervised release.
McAllister commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble for their work on the case, which has brought justice to the victims of Staples' crime.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in the financial industry, and the severe consequences that can result from embezzlement.
